Rook mate when the king starts in the centre

From Chess Fundamentals by José Raúl Capablanca (1921), Chapter 1 — First Principles, Example 2 (Rook and King against King) · Beginner · about 4 minutes.

The previous lesson started with the defending king already on the edge. Here it stands proudly in the centre — and the method barely changes: the attacking king advances first, the rook cuts off ranks behind the retreating king one at a time, and the box only ever shrinks. Watch how often White's king steps right next to its rook: defending it and stealing the enemy king's squares in the same move.

Starting position (FEN): 8/8/8/4k3/8/8/8/4K2R w - - 0 1

Takeaway

King first, then the rook fences rank by rank. Give a check only when it pushes the king toward the edge, and near the end slow down — stalemate is the only way to lose a won rook ending.
